Student Loans

Financing Your Child's Education

Now is the time that you are planning for your child's college education.  Did you know that we offer some types of student loans to help finance your child's education?  Your child, by all means, should try to apply for as many scholarships as they can to reduce the financial burden.  When you have exhausted as many avenues as you can for scholarships and need further help, here are the types of student loans that we offer.

If you have completed the FAFSA Form, the financial aid office of your college will let you know if you qualify for a subsidized (the government pays for the interest while student is in school) or an unsubsidized Guaranteed Student Loan (you are responsible for interest from the time the loan is disbursed).  This is one type of Student Loan that we offer--Stafford Loan--Guaranteed Student Loan.

Another type of student loan that we offer is a PLUS Loan, where the parent takes out the loan and immediately begins repayment of the loan.

The third type of government loan that we offer is a consolidation loan.  This loan consolidates all of your outstanding student loans into one loan with one payment once you graduate and begin repayment of your loan(s).

The final type of student loan that we offer should only be used when all avenues to fund your student's education have been exhausted.  This is a privately funded loan through Lehman Brothers.  We do not fund this loan, we only offer it as an alternative to you, our member.  For further information click on the left hand side under the caption CU Student HELP.  You can apply for this loan immediately!

Please call the credit union for further information at (216) 228-1996 or toll-free at (800) 577-1996.

Don't forget to apply for a college scholarship from the Latvian Cleveland Credit Union!

Don't Fall For The Jury Duty Scam

According to the Better Business Bureau, residents in several states have been victimized by the jury duty scam.  Here's how it works:  A scam artist calls and says he's an officer of the local court and claims that because you've failed to report for jury duty, an arrest warrant has been issued for your arrest.  Of course, you say that you never received the jury duty notification.  The scam artist then asks for confidential information for "verification purposes".  This information includes Social Security number, birthdate, driver's license number, and in some cases, credit card information.  Most consumers will give out this information because they hear the word "warrant".  Remember, a court officer would not call and ask for this type of information over the phone.  Do not answer the questions, just hang up.  NEVER give out your personal, confidential information when you receive a phone call.

Shopping For A Boat?  We've Got Your Loan

Thinking about buying a new or newer used boat brings to mind many choices.  Should you go for speed or comfort?  Motor or sail?  Cabin or open cruiser?  How big?  In making the right choice, consider the advice of experts:  Boating tends to be a social activity.  So get family members, fishing or sailing buddies involved in the decision process.  Determine what activites you, your family, and friends want to engage in, and then choose the type of boat that best fits those needs.  Determine a monthly budget that includes loan payment, maintenance, and docking charges.  Remember, boating is no fun if it puts a strain on the family's finances.  When you've determined what you can afford for a monthly payment, see your credit union.  We can offer you a variety of scenarios depending on the length of the loan you're comfortable with.  With a pre-approved loan in hand, you can then begin to visit the dealers and boat shows and negotiate your best price.  Call or stop by you credit union today for more details.

Get Your Motor Runnin'

Were you born to be wild, even if only on the weekends?  Join the club.  If you haven't noticed, motorcycling isn't just for hippies and outlaws any more.  Millions of middle-class and even well-to-do folks are discovering the joys of the open road.  With the average cost of a touring bike now topping $18,000, motorcycling is not so much about economy any longer as it is about lifestyle.  Whether you're traveling alone, or with that one special person, or with an entire caravan of fellow bikers, there is a certain feeling you get on a motorcycle that you can't experience with any other mode of transportation.

If you've been thinking about a motorcycle, there are many choices to make as to the type of bike-sport bikes, standard street bikes, motocross bikes, touring, cruiser, and vintage/collectible.  Each type has its distinct pros and cons and is designed for a distinct purpose.  And within those types, there are also different engine configurations to consider depending on the amount of power you'll need.  Your credit union urges you to consult with as many experts and resources as you can-especially if this is going to be your first motorcycle.

And when it comes to financing your motorcycle, see your credit union.  We have a variety of loan programs to fit every need and budget.  So if you're ready to hit the open road, we'll help you buy the bike of your dreams at rates that are easy on your wallet.

U. S. Credit Unions Celebrate 99th Anniversary

With credit card offers filling up the mailbox, it may hard to believe there was a time without 'easy financing".  But until the 1920's, borrowing was not socially acceptable and even then, banks weren't interested in serving average consumers, forcing those with a need to borrow to turn to loan sharksOutraged to learn of usurious interest rates, Canadian Journalist Alphonse Desjardins organized cooperative credit societies in Canada and was instrumental in organizing the first U.S. credit union.  When it opened its doors in Manchester, New Hampshire in 1909, the Caisse Populaire Ste. Marie, or St. Mary's Bank as it is known today, provided the parishioners of St. Mary's Church with a place to save and borrow.  From that humble start 99 years ago, thousands of credit unions now serve millions of members, who benefit from the power of cooperation.  Join us as we celebrate 99 years of credit union service.

Help the Environment

According to environmental experts, millions of ink jet and toner cartridges are thrown away each year in the United States, resulting in millions of pounds of waste in landfills.  Spent cartridges can be reused between four to seven times.  Many office supply stores offer discounts or free products in exchange for old cartridges.  Recycle yours!!
